Demitri F. Papolos, M.D., Director of Research of
the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation, and an associate professor
of psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New
York City is the 2002 winner of the Rosenberry Award. Dr. Papolos
will receive the award on April 26th at the Rosenberry Conference,
at which he will be the featured speaker.
This conference is an annual event held in honor of
Walter S. Rosenberry III, benefactor of the Children's Hospital
which is affiliated with the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center in Denver.
In this year's conference, Dr. Papolos will present
an historical overview of bipolar disorder in childhood, describe
the current conundrums and therapeutic pitfalls in the context of
a wide-spectrum of co-morbid conditions, and present data that will
help mental health professionals and educators more easily recognize
juvenile-onset bipolar disorder in their practices and in the classroom.
Recent findings from neuropsychological studies that have identified
a number of specific cognitive deficits and common learning disabilities
that are associated with the condition will be presented. In addition,
specific pharmacological treatment strategies and various alternative
adjunctive approaches currently being studied will be discussed.
Panel workshops will be conducted as part of the program,
one of which will bring together child psychiatrists and mental
health professionals from the Denver area in a clinical case conference
presentation and discussion with Dr. Papolos. In a second panel,
educators and parents of children with child and adolscent-onset
bipolar disorder will describe their experience in the realm of
the school.
