Grand Rounds/Expert Diagnostic Workshop on Juvenile-onset Bipolar Disorder

This monthly online clinical/research forum is bringing together clinicians, researchers, parents, and educators interested in learning more about juvenile-onset bipolar disorder and sharing their knowledge with others in the community.

The Grand Rounds/Expert Diagnostic Workshop utilizes the clinical case conference method, drawing from case reports, psychological and neuropsychological testing, laboratory, and imaging studies of individual cases selected for their teaching value. Cases of juvenile-onset bipolar disorder are drawn from interviews with research participants who have given permission for their use. Each month a case history is posted in the Grand Rounds section of the JBRF website with all identifying information changed to protect the child’s confidentiality. Case histories include descriptions of symptoms course of illness, and other relevant information derived from a diagnostic interview and questionnaires completed by parents, clinicians, teachers, and the patients themselves. Experts from an interdisciplinary group participating in the Expert Diagnostic Workshop program diagnose these cases in order to reach a consensus about the features that define bipolar disorder in children. The diagnostician will respond to questions posed by clinicians and parents, resulting in an ongoing, mutually beneficial dialogue.

A monograph of Grand Rounds cases with discussion will be published by JBRF for distribution to psychiatric residents and child fellows around the country.
